The cameras on smart phones just keep getting better and better – but a handheld video can take the footage of a budding iPhone-Scorsese and turn it into a turgid shake-athon.

The hohem 3-axis gimbal stabilizer for the smartphone is your first step from rough cut to Oscars red carpet…ok, maybe that’s a bit OTT. But it really does improve your shooting technique, giving your footage a touch of flair and professionalism that anything hand-held just won’t match.

Lightweight and compatible with the big smart manufacturers like iPhone, Samsung, Sony and Huawei. You can even hook it up to an app and get loads more settings and features. We found it a little bit fiddly to operate at the start, but once you’ve found your flow you won’t be disappointed with the results.

• It incorporates a load of special functions such as inception mode, 360°  panorama, motion time lapse, hyperlapse, and slow-mo. So you get do all sorts of cool things to make your vids look ace.
• Primarily it’s made to help you film on the go, and get rid of any shake – whether running, jumping, boarding or whatever you do on the go.

• Multiple panning modes and a sports go mode which responds to very delicate movements.
• Works with most major mobile phone brands.
• 12 hours battery life and power bank function.
• Comes with a nifty little tripod that attaches to the gimbal.

Like all gimbals, they take a bit of learning and practice. You may even need to read the instructions at some point.
